Monolith Show!
I am very excited to announce my first solo show at GF Contemporary. The show titled MONOLITH will have an opening reception on July 8th, 2011 at 5pm.
Monolith:
1 a large, powerful organization that cannot change quickly and does not consider the ideas or feelings of the people it affects:
It is misleading to see the legal system as a monolith.
2 a large tall block of stone, especially one that was put in place in ancient times, possibly for religious reasons
The idea of the monolith has interested me for some time now. The word itself brings to me the idea of something that is powerful, solid, and massive. What I want to convey with this series of pieces is the feeling of an object being powerful to the senses. Monoliths can be the direct product of nature, or created and placed on the earth. Monoliths have been used throughout time as shrines in religious ceremonies, and some believe them to influence human evolution. The term is also associated with architecture and the ways of politics. The show will consist of pieces of different scale and mixed media. Some of the work will be representational of the visual aspect of the monolith, and some pieces will be a part of a greater whole as if you are looking at a detail of something much larger. I will also be incorporating sounds that I record with the objects to create a combination of aural and visual aesthetic.
